Sport vs Games : difference and similarities

Hey everyone, I am  going to compare two things together and  this isn't me trying to sway in one  direction or another in fact I would  actually like a lot of input and  comments on to what you guys think as to  this particular subject  so this subject that I'm going to be  talking about is sports versus video  games like what are the differences and  how are they actually a lot alike. One of the first things that we need to  actually ask ourselves is what exactly  is a sport when the word sport came  about it was considered pastime  entertainment something that you do out  of leisure. it since then has grown  into like this whole new word and it  kind of depends on what civilization  you're looking at if you're looking at  Western civilization where everything is  all about football and baseball.

Everyone thinks sport means that you  know everyone's got to always be  physically trained and things like that  but the thing is if the International  Olympic Committee considers chess a  sport how exactly are we pushing the bar  with the word sport here like what direction are we heading with the  whole sports thing. Do we really need to  do all that training to have something  called a sport and if so if everything  is physically if everything revolves  around being physically and mentally  adept if there's a type of game out  there that requires you to be incredibly  mentally up debt and the brain itself is  a physical part of your body if you've  been doing nothing but training your  brain in order to get better at this  particular game wouldn't that also be  some strange form of physical training  especially if you're eating things like  brain food making sure that you eat  things that are healthy for brain  development constantly  training day and night to go ahead and  get things done and then at the other  end of that is the hand-eye  coordination.

If you're good at video  games it's not necessarily you just  looking at a screen and pointing and  clicking there's reaction times involves  your hands your controls whatever you're  using needs to be top-notch  now I'm not saying you know they go out  there and then they wait lift or  anything like that but they constantly  have to play in order to get good at  whatever they're doing and it's not  necessarily just with video games as  other games as well  jetsam and not to mention the  statistics and the numbers think about  it like this if you look at fantasy  football right if you look at fantasy  football and there's nothing but numbers  on this massive chart how is that any  different from looking at massive  numbers for say an RPG or Jetsam any  other kind of game you can think of if  it's all numbers and statistics if  you're thinking hey look this running  backs going to get this many yards and  all this other kind of stuff well what's to say that this character is not  going to I don't know kill this many  things or what's to say that this guy  has this many home runs and this guy has  so much defence that he could I don't  know block so many attacks it's all just  a numbers game the only thing that  separates sports from being called  sports officially is luck if the game  itself relies on luck as an actual  element of the game then it is not a  sport and that's a good  example would be poker some people  consider poker to be a sport but we all  know that card games kind of do have  that that luck thrown in there sure  there is definitely some skill involved  especially with reading your opponent's  but what's drawn from the deck though  was entirely luck based it's is no  longer skill that's not up to you.

That's why pokers not really a sport but  chess is because there is no luck it's  skill versus skill a man and to  think so many times that there have been  video games based off of sports there was even a board game based office  of football and American football and  was called Blood Bowl and they're  actually coming out with a video game of  it later it's a turn-based  football game and you know it's like  orcs and elves and dwarves and all  this other kind of stuff and they're all  these different factions and stuff  playing turn-based football and it's all  dice rolls and stuff the dice rolls are  definitely luck but on the other hand  you got to give them credit for doing  their best to adapt it over another one  of those strange things that we have to  figure out whenever we're playing sports  or video games is sometimes we got to  figure out who goes first who makes a  move first whether it be a coin toss  or a dice roll it doesn't really matter  you're still relying on this slight bit  of chance to see who gets to pick what  decision is going to happen start the  game there's also the critical thinking  skills and plans how are you  supposed to defeat your opponent if you  don't plan things out it goes on both  ends that's why there are coaches with  play books there are there are people  out there with like Dungeons and Dragons  and tired books upon books of stuff on  things that you can do in things that  you can figure out there's so  many things that you need adjust for as  well there's massive amounts of critical  thinking skills on both ends not to  mention.

There's also the endorsements  that come from being a professional on  both ends it doesn't matter what you're  doing if you're a professional for any  type of entertainment I'm pretty sure  you can get an endorsement and the thing is that you're looking at commercials  for you know Nike and I  don't know PowerAde and whatnot and  you're thinking wow look at all those  athletes look at all those people that  I've seen do amazing things before but  then you also have on  other end the whole video game and game  people like oh yeah look there a no  there in an ad for a specific computer  part or a mouse or a keyboard or type a  controller or some type of food or  whatever they train their  asses off to get where they were they  either have natural talent or they've  been training their asses off and  speaking of professionalism drug  bands the thing is that the actual you  know official sports stuff doesn't allow  you know people who take drugs steroids  things like that they actually you know  the big leagues and it's kind of  happening in the video game world there  are actual drug tests for video game  tournaments now because they want to be  taken seriously they don't want to be  this laughingstock anymore not that long  ago what was at ESPN I think try to show  a MOBA and it didn't really go so well  with the feedback from a lot of the fans  because they're like whoa are you are  you guys showing a video game as a sport  LOL this is stupid all those  stupid tweets that people send out and  they they're not really thinking about  it from a good perspective they keep  thinking that a sport is all about just  big buff guys doing whatever and it's  not really the case anymore because  we've branched out let's see there's  also the practice them the massive  amounts of practice I said this earlier  there's so much practice that  needs to go into both ends sports and  video games  how about this you're going to  get a good laugh out of this in South  Korea we all know South Korea is big on  real time strategy games massive on  real-time strategy they love it they  worship people who are good at real-time  strategy games and believe it or not  believe it or not they actually have  government-funded maids that go  over to the I'm going to call them an  athlete just for the sake of argument  they send them over to the  athletes house or apartment to clean  their house their clothes cook them food  do whatever is necessary so they can  actually so the athlete could actually  spend more time playing the game and  practice that's how serious they take it  it's not a joke to them it's a  legitimate sport to them and we can't as  I guess as a civilization say hey look  they're just stupid and crazy whatever  it's just video games.

I don't think you  understand just how fast of a rate these  people are playing these video games if  you would have watched them actually  play with their hands on the keyboard  you would have no idea what's going on  because they're just so into it not to  mention that the fan base the fan bases  are all the same the fan bases are all  the same any merchandise that comes out  they want to eat it up they want to wear  jerseys for their favourite teams they  want to represent their favourite country  they want to you know they want all the products that the  professionals have it's the fan bases  are pretty much entirely the same I mean  don't even buy trading cards there are  trading cards for professional game  players but jetsam the only thing that I  can really honestly wholeheartedly call  a difference is a muscle that's it  that's it if both if both video games  and sports require both athletes to be  at their peak mental capacity and then  one sport and the sports aisle requires  them to be muscular fine that's what  that particular sport does it requires  them to be muscular but video games on  the other hand this particular sport  doesn't require them to be muscular it  only requires them to be at the top of  their mental game the entire time that's  it you're changing out a little bit of  your brain power for muscle or you  can trade out your muscle for more that  brain power that's it  that is the only  differences that I've been able to  conjure up in my mind as to what could  potentially make video games and in in  Western sports all that different  ears there's not really a whole lot like  I've pointed out and this this rant  wasn't really to side with one but I I I  don't understand where people are coming  from when they say that video games  can't be sports it's just it can be you  just you I don't want to sound like a  dick here but you just don't know what  you're talking about  and there's so many factors  and stuff like that that could be I  guess thrown in especially with oh  maybe a video game dude could be a  cheater or whatever it happens in sports  too how many times if I heard people  yelling at a ref all the ref was paid  off and all this other shit you can't  you can't do that you can't do that with  a video and plot plus trust me  whenever someone cheats in video game  tournaments and stuff they're banned  they're gone if they figure out that  they've been cheating like wall  hacking aim-assist anything like that  they're out they're gone like their  reputation is down the drain no one  likes them anymore so it totally  works the same but anyway this is just  kind of been like a food for thought if  you have any rebuttals any other  opinions any other things that you want  to point out that could make them  similar or more different please.
