Information or data is stored on a server and the user computers that requests data are known as client machines. 

When a user requests for some information, the requests are forwarded to the server. Now, the server replies to the requests by transmitting the data to the client. All these steps demand a great deal of communication between the server and the client. That's how data is transferred.
